Update

Talked a lot.
Drank a lot of JD.
Made steaks on the grill outside.
Talked some more.

My friend is on atkins now so we did a little shopping to make sure there was stuff for him to eat in the house.

The big excitment of the night was when Star got a hold of a wedge of sharp cheddar and ate it before any noticed. He was a "bad dog" and banished to the outside for most of the evening. This turned out to be bad for him since he didn't get any scraps from dinner of which there were not a lot but there were a few.
