Build nothing at WTC

Megan of Asymmetrical Information has an article at TechCentral on rebuilding the WTC.

Her idea is that we should build nothing there.
No new towers just a grassy space and a memorial.
I am going to think about this a while and decide if I like the idea or not.

My first reaction is negative but I want to think about it.

Ok I am back and my first reaction is still the way I feel, I hate Megan's idea.

The extended entry has my comment to her post.

Good article Megan, bad idea.

I agree that Libeskind's design might be the best of a bad lot and I have been saying for more than a year that anything designed by a committee is going to be less than satisfying.

I don't think however you can replace something with nothing.
I worked in and around the trade center for 14 years, I have tried to imagine the site as you suggest and to my mind it just doesn't work.

There is a gaping hole in New York's skyline and replacing it with a park will just highlight it as a wound.

New York has always been about building bigger and better and that is what I would like to see on the site.

Make it big, make it grand, make a memorial that thousands will see and pass through everyday. Not just tourists but people who live and work in New York and make it great.

Make it the center of life in downtown, a 24 hour hub of energy in an area that usually closes after work. Have the memorial accessable 24 hours.
Never forget.
